Dear, (Name of MP)

A majority of Canadians, including those of a very young age understand that their life began prior to being born. This understanding has been expounded upon in textbooks used in post-secondary institutions as well as those relied upon to teach elementary school students.

Motion 312, which is about to be debated for the second time, is an attempt by MP Stephen Woodworth to study the definition of a human being as we find it in Section 223 (1) of the Criminal Code of Canada. As you may be aware, Section 223 (1) defines a human being as someone who has “completely proceeded, in a living state from the body of its mother”. This definition runs contrary to the scientific and medical evidence available to us in the 21st century.

Unfortunately, the dominant pro-choice ideology so prevalent in our culture sees this motion as an attack on women’s rights rather than a human rights issue. The result, as seen by the recent statement from the Canadian Medical Association, is that the opposition to Motion 312 is strictly ideologically based. Is this motion inextricably linked to the status quo on abortion in Canada? Absolutely! We need to be aware that just because something is legal it does not mean it’s right. For example, everything Hitler did was legal but we certainly know that it wasn’t right.

As an honourable Member of Parliament, called to serve all Canadians, you are in a position to make noble decisions, also regarding Motion 312. Please consider the implications of denying certain classes of persons the same rights as you and I when voting on Motion 312.

Sincerely,
