Langley, BC – On September 12, thousands of pink flags will be planted in three locations in the Lower Mainland. These flag displays will draw attention to sex selective abortion. This practice happens in Canada without consequence due to our lack of abortion law.

Member of Parliament Cathay Wagantall, who will be attending the flag displays, has put forward a private member’s bill to criminalize sex selection abortion. We Need a Law, a pro-life organization advocating for laws restricting abortion, heartily supports Wagantall’s proposed Sex Selective Abortion Act.

Tabitha Ewert, legal counsel for We Need a Law hopes the bill will draw attention to an injustice facing girls in Canada. “We talk often about equality between the sexes,” Ewert said, “and a part of that is dealing with the fact that abortion disproportionately targets baby girls. Abortion is sometimes described as a woman’s right, but it is being used to target women before they are born. Allowing abortion based on a pre-born child’s sex makes a statement about the value, or lack thereof, that we place on women in Canada.”

Several research studies over the past few years have shown that sex selective abortion is indeed happening in Canada. Ms. Ewert pointed out the inconsistencies in Canadian law as it pertains to discrimination based on sex. “The Assisted Human Reproduction Act prohibits sex selection when it comes to in vitro fertilization. But once the embryo develops into a fetus, sex selection is freely allowed via abortion.”

Polls show that the vast majority of Canadians are opposed to the idea of sex-selective abortion, and We Need a Law calls on government officials to enact laws reflecting this. “Pre-born children are losing their lives simply because they are girls, and we need to draw a line that says this is not okay,” said Ewert.
