Immediate call to action – abortion should not be a right!

We have just heard that Liberal MP Emmanuella Lambropolous intends to propose the following motion at Parliament’s Status of Women Committee:

That the Standing Committee on the Status of Women report to the House that

(a) access and availability to reproductive health services, no matter where one lives in Canada, including safe and legal abortion, is a Charter right and is ensured under the Canada Health Act, and

(b) the decision to have an abortion made by women, transgender and non-binary individuals for any reason is their freedom of choice and theirs alone.

This motion would call on the House of Commons to declare that abortion for any reason (including sex selective abortion) is a Charter right.

The committee will be meeting this Friday, May 13, and it is unclear whether this motion, if introduced, could pass in a day or be something that is debated over multiple weeks. For now, we ask you to contact all the members of the Status of Women Committee this week, respectfully asking them not to support this motion or any similar motion asking for a right to abortion in Canada.

There has been a lot of discussion about abortion since the news of the Roe v Wade decision in the U.S., and abortion is likely to be a key political issue for the next few months. Abortion advocates are out in force, trying harder than ever to promote abortion. They know that the lack of abortion law leaves openings for the future protection of pre-born children, and they are set on enshrining as a right a woman’s choice to kill her pre-born child.
