Today the leaders of the six main parties in Canada will come together for the English language debate.
Pro-life Canadians have questions they want answered during these debates. “In the first debate, we really saw abortion come up only as a weapon, with no one seeming to really care about the very real lives of women and children impacted by abortion. “We know from polls that the majority of Canadians support some restrictions on abortion,” said Tabitha Ewert, Legal Counsel for We Need a Law, a national group advocating for laws protecting pre-born children.
“There are many ways to restrict abortion that most candidates can agree on, and we want to start there,” continued Ewert. “We encourage our supporters and all Canadians to ask about restrictions on late-term abortion and sex-selection abortion, for example. These are clear human rights violations that should not be bound by party lines.”
“We want a leader who will show courage in bringing Canada in line with every other democracy in the world by ensuring legal protection for pre-born children. Every other country has been able to have this conversation – it is an embarrassment that our government has been unable to handle this human rights issue in a meaningful way.”
We Need a Law encourages all Canadians to watch the debate, but more importantly to talk to their local candidates to find out where they stand on the issue of abortion and the human right to life. The organization has provided thousands of doorhangers across the country for people looking for talking points to start a conversation with their MP.
“This is an ongoing discussion in Canada because there is discomfort with the status quo, and abortion is not just like other medical procedures, it has a unique ethical and moral component,” stressed Ewert. “Our leaders and candidates need to decide how they will engage in this debate, because they are not going to be able to avoid it.”
