Press Release: Censorship of clothing needs to stop

Regina, SK – Canada remains one of the only jurisdictions in the world with no abortion laws. This repeatedly leads to a shutting down of discourse on the issue of abortion. Usually limits to freedom of expression are applied only to the pro-life message (consider bubble zones around abortion clinics, for example, where pro-life materials, signs, or conversations are banned). Recently, though, a pro-abortion activist also experienced the chill of the abortion debate.

“The recent demand for an abortion rights activist to turn her shirt inside out before entering the Saskatchewan legislature highlights the need for changes to protocols surrounding the ability to engage in freedom of expression at provincial legislative buildings,” said Mike Schouten, spokesperson for We Need a Law. “While we disagree with her stance that abortion is health care, we support the efforts of Megan Johnston and other abortion activists to exercise freedom to wear apparel that includes written messages.”

We Need a Law has a wide range of clothing, with messages stating: “Human rights for all, no matter how small,” “Loving life,” and “Canada has no abortion laws. Seem backwards?” These shirts are designed and distributed with the recognition that they have the ability to spark conversations. “We look forward to seeing what develops in Saskatchewan. If the rules do change we have hundreds of supporters who would welcome the opportunity to wear our apparel into the legislative buildings,” concluded Schouten.

We Need a Law is a gathering place where parliamentarians, organizations, and all Canadians can come together with the shared purpose of providing a loud and clear message that we need to do all we can to legally protect pre-born children.
