Conservative Party Leader’s Stance on Abortion Highlights Canada’s Lack of Protection for Pre-born Children

The We Need a Law campaign is deeply disappointed by Conservative Party of Canada leader Pierre Poilievre’s recent remarks affirming his commitment to not pass any laws restricting abortion if elected Prime Minister. Poilievre’s comments are similar to those of Liberal leader Mark Carney who unashamedly announced his support for abortion in his first speech of the election campaign.
In a country that prides itself on democratic values, Canada remains the only democracy in the world without any legal protections for pre-born children.
“Pierre Poilievre’s stance reveals the troubling reality that he views the lives of pre-born children as a political liability rather than a responsibility,” stated Anna Nienhuis, spokesperson for We Need a Law. “It is disheartening to see political leaders so easily disregard the lives of over 100,000 babies aborted each year.”
According to the latest statistics from the Canadian Institute for Health Information, the number of reported abortions rose from 97,211 in 2022 to 101,553 in 2023, the highest figure in the past ten years. Yet polls have shown that the majority of Canadians do not support late-term abortion of viable children, or abortion based on the child’s sex.
“Canada’s lack of abortion laws is an anomaly on the global stage, leaving pre-born children without any legal rights or protections. This extreme position, supported by Poilievre and the other major federal parties, ignores the reality of humanity in the womb,” said Nienhuis. “A promise not to restrict abortion signals an unwillingness to seek a path toward a more compassionate and just society.”
It is time for our leaders to recognize the value of every life and to take a stand for the most vulnerable among us. The We Need a Law campaign calls on all Canadians to engage in this vital conversation about the protection of pre-born children and to demand that our leaders prioritize their rights.
