Ottawa, ON – After a two-year COVID hiatus, Marches for Life are back in major cities across the country including Victoria, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Toronto, and Ottawa on May 12 and 13. These marches typically draw thousands of Canadians who support the pro-life cause, calling on federal and provincial governments to implement protections for these vulnerable human beings.
“The marches are a beautiful opportunity to come together and see the vitality and commitment of the pro-life movement,” says Tabitha Ewert, legal counsel for We Need a Law, a national campaign advocating for legislation that protects pre-born children. “Canada remains the only democratic country with no abortion law, and more and more Canadians are recognizing that this is not just about an abortion debate, but this is a human rights issue. It’s something we need to get out and make visible, to be a voice for the voiceless.”
Close to 100,000 abortions happen annually in Canada, both surgically, and medically through abortion pills, which are now funded and available in every province.
“There is just such a mess around abortion in Canada,” says Ewert. “Women report choosing abortion because they felt they had no other option, because social supports aren’t in place for them to feel like they can succeed if they have a child. Men have no responsibility toward their pre-born child, and in fact sometimes pressure their partners to abort. Criminals who knowingly kill a pregnant woman are sentenced for only one victim. Statistics are poorly kept, with the abortion pill not being tracked in most provinces and private clinics not always reporting their surgical abortions. These pre-born lives are not counted, and ultimately that means their mothers are not counted. The Liberal government keeps advocating for more and more access to abortion, claiming it cares about empowering women, but in actuality isolating them and telling them to deal with pregnancy alone. We have so much work to do as a pro-life movement, and it has to start with raising awareness and waking Canadians up to what the status quo actually is and what that means for Canadians women.”
