All Major Parties Condemn Sex-Selective Abortion

19/03/2013 / blog posts

Political PartiesMotion 408 is set to be debated for the first time in the coming weeks. Mark Warawa has been clear that his motivation for putting forward this motion was the calls his office received following the CBC investigation which revealed pre-born girls were being targeted simply because they are females. He feels strongly that Motion 408 should receive all party support in the House of Commons as immediately following the CBC story all the major parties were quick to condemn this unfair discrimination.

That said, we take nothing for granted. As has been reported in recent weeks, there are still some vocal Canadians who are so fixated on abortion being a women’s right that they have indicated an unwillingness to support Motion 408.

In light of this we have prepared a new letter for you to send to your MP asking him or her to support this important motion to condemn sex-selective pregnancy termination.

Please read the letter below and click here to send it.

Dear,

In June 2012 a CBC undercover investigation found that gender selective abortions are happening in Canada. It is troublesome to me that pre-born females are being targeted in the womb simply because they are girls.

Shortly after CBC aired their investigation all the political parties in Ottawa condemned this from happening. Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq said, “We totally condemn that… it is unacceptable”. NDP heath critic Libby Davies along with her colleague Niki Ashton said in a statement, “it [abortion] has no place in our society”.  (Source: http://www.cbc.ca/news/health/story/2012/06/13/ultrasounds-entertainment-ban.html)

Motion 408 as introduced by Member of Parliament Mark Warawa is a summary of the reactions of each political party. It is imperative that in the struggle against gendercide you support it.

In addition to all the political parties condemning sex-selective abortion, the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia, and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario have all publicly condemned it as well. Rarely have we come across something in which 92% of Canadians agree.

Motion 408 presents an opportunity for Canada’s elected leaders to take a stand in condemning unfair discrimination against females and it is my sincere hope that you will be supporting it when it is debated and voted on in the House of Commons.

Sincerely,
