After reviewing government reports of adverse reactions to the drugs, national pro-life group Campaign Life Coalition is asking Health Canada to pull the abortion pill Mifegymiso off the market. These pills have been legal in Canada since 2017 and have become a popular taxpayer-funded way to end the lives of pre-born children.
But the pills aren’t just dangerous for the children being targeted.
According to the Health Canada website, there were over 45 “serious” adverse reactions to Mifegymiso, the name given to the two-drug combination of mifepristone and misoprostol which are used together to induce abortion. In our position paper on the abortion pill we explain more about how these drugs starve a pre-born child of nutrients and then cause the uterus to contract to expel the child.
While the abortion pill is almost always deadly for the pre-born child, it can also cause serious harm to mothers who take it. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, gastric discomfort, abdominal pain, fatigue, fever, and dizziness are very common side effects. Other possible side effects include prolonged bleeding, severe hemorrhaging, or the need for a surgical abortion to finish the job. Infection and hemorrhagic shock requiring blood transfusions are also listed as potential complications on the product monograph.
Reports from Health Canada indicate possible deaths connected to the abortion pill – and they are only counting the deaths of mothers, not pre-born children. Not only are we isolating women in crisis by telling them to handle their pregnancy themselves, we are also giving them drugs that kill their children and have the potential to kill the women in the process.
We join Campaign Life Coalition in calling the government to take these pills off the market. The “easy fix” is never the best option, and surely we can find better ways to help women facing a crisis pregnancy that doesn’t involve anyone needing to die.
