On the heels of the March for Life thousands of pink and blue flags will be planted around the Human Rights Monument in downtown Ottawa today. The flags are being planted by participants in a two-day conference hosted by We Need a Law, a national group advocating for laws protecting fetal interests.

“Canada is the only country in the world with zero protections for pre-born human beings. This results in 100,000 abortions occurring every year,” said Mike Schouten, Director of We Need a Law. “It’s time for Canada to get in line with our international counterparts by protecting fetal interests.”

The pink and blue flags represent the children lost to abortion each year. The display does not include any graphic imagery, but is a starting point for conversations about the status quo on abortion in Canada.

“Around 80% of Canadians think there is already a law in place,” said Schouten. “Polls consistently show that a majority of Canadians support restrictions on late-term abortions and sex-selective abortions. We also know many women feel pressured or coerced into abortion, and wish they had support to make a different choice.”

There is huge significance in planting the flags around the Human Rights Monument.

“The right to life is a universally acclaimed right,” said Schouten. “In spite of what Prime Minister Trudeau or Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson purport, abortion is not a Charter right. In fact, the Supreme Court has consistently looked to Parliament to protect fetal interests. So long as abortion is legal we will continue working with Canadians and lawmakers to advance human rights for the smallest members of the human family.”

The flags will be on display on Friday, May 11 from about 11 am – 3 pm.

Mike Schouten, Director of We Need a Law, is available for interviews throughout the day. Please contact Alicia Ibbitson at 778-858-2461 or [email protected] to arrange a suitable time.
